Kids Safety Checklist for a Birthday Party
The most memorable party is usually also the safest one. Use this checklist to make sure every safety angle is covered, before and during the event.
Play Area Safety
Before guests arrive, walk around the play area crouched at kid height, so you can see what's at their eye level. Sharp table corners need foam padding or a rubber corner guard. An extension cord lying on the floor is a trip hazard — tape it to the wall or cover it with a cable protector. Exits, especially ones leading to a road or hazardous area, should be guarded or locked. For an outdoor party, also check for holes or uneven ground. Ponds, pools, or fountains must always be supervised or fenced off.
Allergies and Food Restrictions
Ask about food allergies along with the invitation — don't wait until the day of. The most common culprits are nuts, dairy, eggs, and gluten, so specifically ask about these four. Clearly label any dish containing common allergens. For a child with a serious allergy, prepare a separate set of safe alternative snacks. If a child has a history of anaphylaxis, ask their parent whether they carry an EpiPen, and make sure you know where it is and who can administer it.
Supervision and Adult Ratio
A general rule: one adult for every 4–5 children under age 5, and one for every 8–10 children ages 5–10. Don't rely on the MC or organizer for full safety supervision — their job is entertainment. Clearly decide who's responsible for watching kids in the play area, especially during busy moments like cake-cutting, when everyone's focused on one spot. If a child needs the toilet, they must be accompanied by a familiar adult, not sent alone.
First Aid and Emergency Contacts
Prepare a simple first-aid kit with assorted plasters, antiseptic spray, wet wipes, and gauze — better to have it unused than not have it at all. Save the nearest clinic or hospital's number on your phone, and make sure at least one other person has it too. If a guest child has a special medical condition like epilepsy or asthma, ask their parent for brief written instructions on what to do if it flares up. And if a child falls or gets scraped, don't panic — handle it calmly so the child doesn't panic too and the party can continue.
