A custom cake takes time, so don't order it at the last minute. For a fondant tiered or 3D themed cake, a professional baker usually needs a minimum lead time of 10–14 days, even up to 21 days for a very complex design. If your party falls on a weekend or a public holiday, order even earlier, since popular baker slots fill up fast. If you order last-minute — 2–3 days out — the result almost always falls short of expectations because the baker is rushed. So make ordering the cake one of the first things you confirm once your party date is locked in.

How to Communicate the Design Correctly

Reference photos are the most universal language for communicating with a baker. Gather 3–5 photos of cakes you like, then explain specifically which element you want to take from each — the color, the character, or the decorating technique. Don't just say 'Frozen theme' without further detail, since there are hundreds of versions of a Frozen cake out there. State the dominant color you want, the specific character (just Elsa, or Anna too?), fondant or buttercream, the cake size in kg or servings, and whether you need writing or an age number on top.

Taste vs Looks: Don't Sacrifice Either

Practical Things Often Forgotten

Confirm the delivery or pickup schedule in advance, since a custom cake can't be ordered in the morning and picked up the same afternoon. Also make sure there's fridge space to store the cake if it arrives a few hours before the party starts. Ask the baker about handling — how long it's safe at room temperature, whether it can survive a car ride with AC. Once the cake arrives, check its overall condition before the driver leaves, and photograph the cake as soon as it's opened from the box as proof of its condition upon arrival.
